TRANCE

8/21/2013

Danny Boyle directed, violent, nasty dark, psychological thriller vehicle for Rosario Dawson, who is amazing; co-starring James McAvoy and my favorite badassmofo Vincent Cassel: yes.

INFAMOUS (2006)

4/28/2013

I barely remember Capote, and I'm sure it's good, but this Truman Capote In Cold Blood biopic features his New York City socialite friends, and a romance with Daniel Craig: yes!

LIFE OF PI

2/21/2013

Stunningly beautiful, slightly talkie at the end, but absolutely, one of Ang Lee's best: yes!

SOUND OF MY VOICE

11/2/2012

If you don't mind an ambiguous and crappy ending, then you might enjoy this low budget attempt at psycho / time-travel / cultdom infiltration. The end is first surprising, then infuriating. Like a selfish lover who teases you to the brink of a mild yet satisfying orgasm, and leaves you hanging to go listen to bad music...

NORWEGIAN WOOD

7/6/2012

French / Vietnamese director Tran Anh Hung (The Scent of Green Papaya) adapts Haruki Murakami's novel about love, sex, loss, and insanity, set in 1960s Japan. Long, but beautiful cinematic romantic drama.

IN THE CUT (2003)

5/26/2012

Remember Meg Ryan? Bet she thought she could resuscitate her career with Jane Campion's dreadfully flawed attempt at an erotic, thriller, which is neither. BTW in "the cut" means "vagina" and yes, one of the characters actually delivers the title in a line. Awful.

A DANGEROUS METHOD

4/18/2012

Jung, Freud, psychology, the era, the actors: love them all, but Cronenberg's direction is cold and flat; the story: thin. Not terrible, not great.

Elizabeth Olsen is fabulous as a young woman struggling to escape the physical and mental clutches of a violent cult and it's Manson-esque leader played by John Hawkes. Psychological story told in flashback: and it's open-ended. Creepy good!

TAKE SHELTER

3/15/2012

Michael Shannon; huge head, can speak without moving his lips, mumbles, most moodiest actor since Oliver Reed, intense, amazing: love him. This story suits him, and Jessica Chastain is good too. Excellent film.

THE LINCOLN LAWYER

7/14/2011

Routine yet engaging adaptation of a Michael Connelly novel. Matthew McConaughey's well cast in this role as an L.A. criminal defense attorney with a southern drawl. The characters are interesting, the tension builds and ultimately pays-off despite the egregious camera zooms.
